St. John Baptist de La Salle was born on April 30, 1651, in the town of Reims, France. It was located in the Champagne region of France. In fact, his grandfather owned vineyards in a nearly town and John used to visit his grandparents there in the summer. His own father was a magistrate in Reims, and his mother Nicole had come from a noble family.
John Baptist was the the first and oldest child of the family. Eventually, there were 11 children, of whom seven survived to become adults. Remember that this was a time of much disease and not very much medical knowledge of drugs.
