St. John Baptist de La Salle died on April 7, 1617, in Rouen, France. He had been living at the school of Saint Yon in his later years, officially retired but very active with the students, young Brothers, and general community. He was also deeply loved and respected as the Founder of the Brothers who taught there.
When he died, there were 100 Brothers spread out throughout France among 23 communities. Some of those communities had Brothers who traveled each day to several school sites. We think that there were 34 Lasallian schools in operation at the time.
