Holy Audacity: A Short History of the Lasallian Charism & Mission offers a compelling account of one of the most influential movements in the history of Catholic education. Founded in seventeenth-century France by Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle, the De La Salle Christian Brothers pioneered teacher formation and created a new model of community-based educational ministry that continues to shape schools and universities around the world.
This book traces the development of the Lasallian educational mission across more than 350 years, from its origins in early modern Europe to its global presence today. Along the way, it explores the impact of the French Revolution, world wars, colonial expansion, the reforms of Vatican II, and the emergence of lay leadership in Catholic institutions. Particular attention is given to the evolving understanding of association, shared mission, and Lasallian spirituality—key concepts that continue to guide Catholic schools and educational ministries.
Drawing on archival sources and historical scholarship, Brother George Van Grieken, FSC, presents an accessible yet deeply informed study of how a non-clerical religious institute transformed Catholic schooling and influenced educational leadership worldwide.
