Interest in Lasallian scholarship has grown more widely over the last fifty years, as both scholars and ordinary Lasallian educators have developed an appetite for pursuing questions related to Lasallian history, pedagogy, and spirituality. Both the Buttimer Institute and the Lasallian Research Symposium have encouraged this greater interest.
Ever since the General Chapter of 1956, the Institute has made a concerted effort in develop greater scholarship in Lasallian studies. Today the translations of De La Salle’s major works – such as The Conduct, The Meditations, and The Letters – have led to studies such as Lasallian Themes, the Cahiers Lasalliens, and Henri Bedel’s History of the Institute. On the higher education level, there are now programs in Lasallian Studies amazing digital research journals such as AXIS and the digital journal at the Motherhouse in Rome.
Opportunities abound for those seeking to pursue general or arcane Lasallian study areas. For those starting out, it’s best to simply begin reading available resources such as the MEL bulletins, “Spirituality in the Time of John Baptist de La Salle” and “So Favored by Grace.” Attendance at either the Buttimer Institute and/or the annual Lasallian Research Symposium will allow collaboration with like-minded Lasallians and the inevitable benefits that result in one’s exposure to, and appreciation of, the larger world of Lasallian scholarship.
