Leaders in Lasallian schools, whether Presidents, Principals, second-line administrators, trustees, or others in leadership positions, have the unique privilege and challenge of carrying the Lasallian mission forward in very concrete ways through very specific circumstances. With that responsibility comes an expectation of a deeper understanding of Lasallian history, pedagogy, and spirituality.

Two major books that should be read are “Touching the Hearts of Students” and “The Work is Yours.” They provide foundational exposure to the roots of the Lasallian educational movement. From a more historical perspective in terms of pedagogy, the late 18th century essay on the 12 Virtues by Brother Agathon show the consistency of educational perspectives within our Lasallian tradition, while the book “John Baptist De La Salle: The Spirituality of Christian Education” collects the best of his writings in one place. The most significant recent publications from Rome on the topic of “Association” – Circular 461 and Bulletin 254 and – should be on any Lasallian leader’s reading list, at least in the long term.

Among videos that are available, those on “The Life of De La Salle” and “The Purpose of Lasallian Schools” are worth watching as ways of engaging in a reflective dialogue with your own experience. Do they resonate with your own experience? Is this what your school community looks like or reflects? Taking a look at new Lasallian video on the website every week will foster a greater sense of the Lasallian world.

Finally, it’s worthwhile checking out the District, Regional, and International Lasallian websites because they offer a continually changing array of activities, invitations, announcements, and informational tidbits, many of which are worth sharing with others in the school. Likewise, the extensive opportunities to participate in programs, institutes, and retreats are a rich treasure for both yourself and for the teachers confided to your care. Meditations of John Baptist De La Salle

The collection of 208 meditations by St. John Baptist de La Salle, each in three parts, that cover a wide range of topics, saints, feast days, and matters directly related to the education of youth. It’s focus is on the person of the teacher and the spiritual dimensions of an educator’s vocation. It is an inspiring guidepost to anyone in the ministry of education. Some of the sentiments in 17th century theology. But much of this book may be applied to one’s own journey as a Lasallian administrator and the demands that the responsibility makes.

The Brothers of the Christian Schools in the World Today – A Declaration (1967)

This is “an authoritative statement that would serve as foundation and unifying principle” of the work of the 39th General Chapter of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (1966-67). This 1997 translation of the document corrects some aspects of the original translation, as explained by Br. Luke Salm in the introduction.The document invites Lasallian educators “to resolutely enter upon the path of renewal and adaptation.”

Over the last 50 years, the Declaration has continued to be one of the most pivotal documents in the process of renewal among everyone associated with Lasallian schools, and it retains its relevance, appeal, and vitality to this very day.

This version of the Declaration, the work of the 39th General Chapter of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (1966-67) is the 1997 translation of the document with annotations in the margins that refer to the Rule of 2015.

Since its publication in 1967, The Brother of the Christian Schools in the World Today: A Declaration has profoundly impacted the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. This impact can be seen in specific sections of the current Rule, approved by the 45th General Chapter in 2014 and by the Vatican in 2015. This annotated version of the Declaration provides documentation of the specific parts of the text which were foundational for parts of the new Rule. On each page of the text that of this version of the Declaration, the citations on the left margin indicate specific Articles in the current 2015 Rule. For further reference, the full text of each part of the Rule that is cited are listed at the end of the document.

The Story of De La Salle

This children’s book, created by the ARLEP District (Spain & Portugal), tells the story of St. John Baptist de La Salle, using his own voice. The artwork and the text are designed for use with young children. It was produced for the 300th anniversary of De La Salle’s passing into eternal life and has been translated into English in order to reach a larger audience.
